Science Fiction. The Market of Unclaimed Things The floating market drifted above the cloud sea, tethered to nothing but old balloons and the warm updrafts of a vanished city. Stalls leaned against one another in crooked rows, their tables crowded with memories that had lost...
Science Fiction. The Low-Tide Crossing At low tide, the lake came out from beneath the village like a secret the earth could no longer contain. It filled the trough between the giant’s oldest ribs, blue-green under a sky the color of bruised plums. Eucalyptus trees grew from...
Surrealism. The Courtyard of Unfinished Sentences At the bottom of the comet monastery, where the stone walls curved inward like the inside of a bell, Mara Venn planted stories in neglected courtyards. She worked with a silver trowel, a watering can filled with rainwater, and...
Mystery. The Door at Closing Hour By the time Mara reached the floating market, the rain had turned the stalls into islands of blurred silver. Memory hung beneath their awnings in glass bubbles: a wedding bell, a kitchen knife, a child's black tooth. Each had lost the hand that...
Surrealism. The Tenant Who Had Not Arrived On the fourth floor of the building for people who could only remember the future, Mara Venn earned her wages by planting stories in neglected courtyards. She carried a trowel made from a teaspoon, a brass key with no lock, and a...
Hopeful Science Fiction. The Doctor of Elsewhere Winter sealed Vey Station in lavender dusk. Frost silvered the iron canopy, and the departure board displayed impossible seasons: ORCHARD, 6:40; SALT COAST, 6:55; FIRST THUNDER, 7:10. The board had been installed by the old line...
Mystery. The Door in the Elm Mara Vale worked before dawn, when the glass cooled blue in the bucket and the garden slept beneath a rain-silver sky. The Threshold Garden stood around an ancient elm whose bark had split into doorways. Some opened on kitchens. Some opened on oceans...
Mystery. The Platform Beneath Winter At 4:17 each morning, Mara Vale climbed into the lighthouse and opened the sky. Winter had sealed the harbor with hail, but beyond the salt glass, autumn sailed over a green sea and summer walked openly through orchards still buried in snow....
Science Fiction. Shadows Before Snow At Veilfall, shadows reached the resort before the guests did. They slipped beneath the pines, crossed the frozen ornamental pond, and climbed the stairways of the guesthouse while the sky remained the color of bruised fruit. Terracotta roofs...
Fantasy. The Lake Beneath the Garden Twice each month, when the sea withdrew beyond the violet cliffs and left the smell of iron on the wind, Vesper Lake appeared beneath Orison Garden. It came up the way a held breath comes up: quietly, and all at once. Neral rowed across it...
Magical Realism. The Courtyard of Small Weather On the third terrace of the comet monastery, where the walls were pearl and the stairways curved like the inside of a horn, Mara Venn kept municipal appointments. She carried a ledger with a rubber band around it, a brass watering...
Mystery. The catalog of vanished skies Mara Venn kept the weather ledger beneath the northern hydroponic dome, where three hundred date palms leaned beneath a counterfeit sun. Rain crossed the glass in silver threads. Every drop carried a pressure profile from a world no human...
Science Fiction. The Returning Things At low tide, the beach of Bellweather became an archive of what people had forgotten. A silver button. A child’s shoe. A bottle with no message. A red scarf appeared each morning on the shingle below the nurse’s cottage, damp as a wound...
Weird Fiction. The Market Above the Water At dusk, when the saffron lanterns came alight, the market rose out of the marsh on rafts of lacquered wood. It had no oars and no poles. It simply arrived, the way a rumor arrives, and the villagers came out to see what it had brought....
Weird Fiction. The Last Address Mara carried one letter inside the paper hull of a tiny paper boat, and the boat inside a green stone no larger than a plum seed. Saffron sunlight poured through the orbital greenhouse’s stained panels. Beyond them, stars burned without weather....
Magical Realism. The Courtyard Without an Hour Mara had been appointed municipal gardener of the Clockmakers’ Monastery before anyone told her the courtyard had no hour. The notice said only: Plant what the city has forgotten. She arrived at noon, though the monastery bell had...
Speculative Fiction. The Last Room He Left At sixty-eight, Elias Venn could remember only what had not happened yet. Not the past, which had grown unreliable, but the coming hours, which arrived at him fully dressed: the entrance, the lighting, the cue for his line. Every...
Science Fiction. The Water Between Names The archive had drowned slowly, one sentence at a time. Its lowest shelves stood in green water, their spines softened to paste, while librarians rowed between the stacks in narrow black skiffs. They carried wax tablets, reed pens, and...
Speculative Fiction. The Archive at Low Water By winter, the library had risen to the second railing of its reading room. The librarians rowed between shelves in narrow black boats, calling shelf numbers like bell buoyoys. Their oars disturbed the reflections of chandeliers,...
Speculative Fiction. The Seamstress of Two Streets At first light, the shadows of Veyr came out. They slipped from beneath doors, slid along gutters, and gathered beneath the pale winter sun. Each carried a citizen's outline, though not always the citizen's face. A baker's...
Weird Fiction. The seed’s memory Former astronaut Mara Venn had stayed in orbit for eleven years, long after Earth became a rumour that arrived too late to correct itself. Below the station, storms had drowned the continents in pale ash. Above them, the greenhouse turned...
Science Fiction. The Library of What Came Next Everyone in the Starling House remembered tomorrow, except the children. Their memories went elsewhere, into halls smelling of wet wool and eucalyptus, where futures waited behind locked doors like restless animals. Mara carried her...
Hopeful Science Fiction. The River’s Memory At the monastery of Saint Orison, cut into the dark flank of a comet, every corridor sloped toward the same chamber. Nera Venn arrived there with silver dividers in one hand and a salt jar in the other. Her occupation was listed as...
Science Fiction. The Blue Suitcase The monastery sat above a valley where clocks had stopped trusting one another. Farmers opened their shutters according to bellbirds, ferrymen calculated crossings by the blue hour, and government messengers carried two clocks: one for...
