Surrealism. The Memory of Unbuilt Rooms On the ninth floor of the Ardent Apartments, every window faced tomorrow. The residents could remember breakfast they had not eaten, reunions they had not earned, and the exact expressions of people who had not yet been born. They never...
Hopeful Science Fiction. Signal 902 On the last night of her working life, Inez Vela spread a map across the observatory floor and drew a door. She drew it in the empty place between two vanished lakes, using the black ink reserved for coastlines that had been swallowed by sand....
Magical Realism. The Night Watch At the edge of the desert, where the mountains looked like folded pieces of iron, Nara kept an observatory for stars that sent messages. From the roof she watched the dishes turn beneath the pearl sky, their silver bowls gathering light from...
Gothic Fantasy. The Catalogue of the Unborn On the lowest shelf of the monastery’s future room, Sister Anja Vey found the ledger dated three hundred years hence. The chamber had been cut into the comet’s white coral heart, its walls veined with red thread where miners had...
Science Fiction. The Last Reel The abandoned cinema sat behind the eucalyptus depot, its roof patched with terracotta tiles and its ticket window nailed shut. Every night at moonrise, the building showed a film no one had requested. The images were clear. The sound was not. They...
Speculative Fiction. The Brass Compass Mara Venn was apprenticed to a cartographer who measured coastlines by their willingness to change. His maps were charcoal and rust red, salted at the edges, and corrected before the ink dried. He had given her a brass compass with a needle...
Surrealism. The Country Without a Morning At the monastery of clockmakers, no one owned a watch. The walls held thousands of them, each behind a glass door, each keeping a different hour. Some advanced in patient increments. Some trembled at midnight. One had no hands and chimed...
Weird Fiction. The Book Below the Counter On the seventh night of saffron rain, I lent the blue book to a courier whose shadow had six arms. He stood at my counter beneath the market, where the city’s first floor ended in a black cliff and the night stalls continued downward...
Science Fiction. The Museum of Refusals At the end of the Museum of Doors, Mara found the room with no exhibit. Terracotta dust covered the floor, eucalyptus leaves pressed blue-green against the windows, and beyond the glass the sky hung like a split plum, bruised violet at its...
Speculative Fiction. The Country on Her Hand Every morning, Sister Vey poured charcoal dust over the apprentice maps until the monastery’s floor resembled a storm seen from above. The comet beneath them had no horizon, only a long curve of stone disappearing into rust-red...
Surrealism. The last orbit Mara Venn kept her wristwatch set to Earth time, though Earth had become a rumour told by static. From the observatory above the drowned archive, she watched librarians row between shelves, their oars making small green hinges of the water. Below them,...
Science Fiction. Under the First Floor Night opened beneath the city without descending any stair. The market arrived as a warm mineral breath through grates, carrying steam, cardamom, and the smell of wet clay. Above it, towers ended at their first floors, their windows glowing...
Speculative Fiction. First Floor, No Sky At dusk, the market unfurled beneath the city like a red wound. There was no street below the first floor. The city began on broad stone terraces and climbed from there, its foundations sealed by old laws and newer concrete. Beneath the...
Speculative Fiction. The Measuring Line At dusk, Mara Venn lowered her silver spoon into the river and waited for the current to trouble its surface. The border town of Silt Bell divided at the water: the old quarter on the rust-red bank, the new quarter on the charcoal bank,...
Surrealism. The Building That Knew Tomorrow Every apartment in 853 kept a different tomorrow. The child in 851 could recall the exact weather of his eighteenth birthday. Mrs. Vale in 857 remembered the argument she would have with a man not yet born. On the seventh floor,...
Folk Horror. The theatre of discarded endings By the time Mara Venn returned to Earth, the sea had stopped behaving like a map. It lay beyond the black windows of the orbital elevator, folded into a silver argument, while the continents below wore names that no longer agreed...
Speculative Fiction. The Mountain That Kept Still At dawn, Mara Venn climbed into the observatory with a silver spoon in one hand and a salt jar in the other. The observatory was cut into the caldera’s north wall, a black chamber opening toward a valley where snow lay thin as...
Weird Fiction. The Door in the Bicycle Wheel Mara's bicycle had one advantage over every other courier in Bellwether: its front wheel could pass through a door before the door knew it was there. She rode through markets that appeared only after rain, through kitchens asleep...
Speculative Fiction. The Actor and His Shadow By winter, the city had learned to walk in two directions. People crossed the iron bridges beneath rust-red clouds, while their shadows went ahead, opening doors, buying tickets, whispering into telephones. At noon, a man named Elias...
Science Fiction. Stall Nine Under the first floor of Veyr, the night market began. There was no stair down into it. The stalls rose from a dark plane that smelled of wet stone, cardamom, and hot copper, their awnings stitched from terracotta cloth. Above them hung a ceiling of...
Speculative Fiction. The Tenant Who Knew Tomorrow By the time Emil Varga moved into the Meridian House, he had forgotten three languages, four wives, and the taste of his mother's coffee. Retirement had taken the rest in small, sensible portions. He retained one talent. Any room...
Surrealism. The Glassblower's Window Mara kept her ordinary morning in a pane of blue glass. At dawn she drank bitter tea beside the south wall, watched steam erase the orchard path, and listened to her neighbor's broom strike the same three stones in the same three pauses. Then...
Mystery. The Last Screening Rain silvered the abandoned cinema windows. Behind the glass, the marquee still glowed: THE FUTURE THAT ALMOST HAPPENED. No performer had been advertised. No ticket price appeared. Only a number in amber, bright as a single warm window across the...
Science Fiction. The catalogue of the vanished At the base of the lighthouse, where the whale’s iron ribs met the sea, Mara Venn kept the archive in a room shaped like an ear. Brass drawers climbed the walls in crooked rings. Each drawer held names that had belonged to...
