Hopeful Science Fiction. Maps of the Missing On the night the city stopped appearing on ordinary maps, Mara Vale received a moth wing. It arrived in a paper envelope with no address, resting against her name at the theatre's old ticket window. The wing was lavender, powdered...
Hopeful Science Fiction. The Illness of Elsewhere At the Monastery of Patient Hours, Dr. Ilyra Senn treated homesickness as if it were a respiratory disease. She listened for the small silences inside her patients: the pause before a familiar name, the hands reaching toward a...
Hopeful Science Fiction. The Houses That Remembered Dr. Iona Vale kept her clinic beneath the fourth rib of the sleeping giant, where the village of Ossa had built its homes from salvaged bone and blue glass. The ribs curved overhead like the ribs of some vast cathedral, stained...
Hopeful Science Fiction. The Note Under the Snow Nia first heard the note in the garden’s eastern greenhouse, where rain tapped the glass roof like impatient fingers. She was tuning her violin when a gardener told her the pear tree had died. The sentence was true. A clear...
Hopeful Science Fiction. The Theatre of Unfinished Things Every morning, Mara unlocked the theatre before the street had decided what colour to be. Lavender light gathered beneath the broken skylight. Wet asphalt gleamed beyond the doors, and the pharmacy sign across the lane...
Hopeful Science Fiction. The Note Under the Bridge On the morning the winter failed to end, Mara Venn crossed the Sallow Bridge with a white feather tucked behind her ear and a silver spoon in her pocket. Every bridge in Bellwether was a promise made visible. Iron ropes held the...
Hopeful Science Fiction. The Note Under Her Fingernail In the Museum of Doors, Mara Venn played the broken piano no visitor was permitted to touch. Its keys had been blackened by fingerprints, its strings loosened by years of winter dust. Still, whenever a person crossed the...
Hopeful Science Fiction. What the Mountain Kept The mountain observatory occupied the inside of a volcano, though no one called it that. Its brass instruments lined the walls in patient rows, each one listening through a silver ear toward the buried valley. Lavender steam leaked...
Hopeful Science Fiction. Arrival The first shadow crossed the frozen lake before the first ski lift opened. It moved without a body, keeping to the wet asphalt where plows had cut black seams through the lavender snow. Mara Venn watched from the survey cabin as it climbed the...
Hopeful Science Fiction. The Film Beneath the Floor Mara Venn arrived at the abandoned Orion Cinema with a folding bridge gauge, two pencils, and a silver spoon balanced inside the pocket of her survey coat. For eleven years she had mapped the emotions moving through the...
Hopeful Science Fiction. The Door That Opened Downstream On the first morning of the thaw, Mara Venn found a door standing in the mud beside the river. It was narrow, blue, and streaked with salt. Its brass handle shone like a wet stone. Behind it, instead of a room, she saw...
Hopeful Science Fiction. The Work Below the Glass Every morning at two minutes past six, Mara Venn lowered herself onto the copper rail above the observatory’s floor and began her private ritual. The river moved beneath the glass floor: not the mountain’s cold meltwater, but...
Mystery. The Unremembered Garden On the seventh floor of the Arreton Apartments, Mara Venn unlocked the service elevator with a brass key warm as a summer stone. She carried it on a blue cord beneath her coat, though no one in the building had seen her use it for anything but...

Hopeful Science Fiction. The Train That Missed Its Century At 4:17 each afternoon the station clock stopped at the same wrong minute. Nobody had ever reset it. The mechanism had been sound in 1949 and the maintenance men who came twice a year checked the sign, wiped the glass,...
Hopeful Science Fiction. The Market of Unclaimed Things By the time Orin Vale reached the market, the rain had turned the floating platforms into islands of wet asphalt. Lanterns floated beneath the boards, their lavender light trembling underfoot. Stalls sold memories without...

Hopeful Science Fiction. The Patient at the End of the World Dr. Iona Vale kept the lighthouse on the whale’s back, though neither the lighthouse nor the whale could be called still. The whale slept beneath the sea, a vast iron body carrying a tower of green glass. At night,...
Hopeful Science Fiction. The Train with No Platform Dr. Anja Vale arrived at Meridian station on a train that had no platform behind it. The locomotive was painted the deep violet of a thunderhead, and its windows glowed the green of pharmacy signs against the lavender dunes....
Weird Fiction. The Book Below the Stairs The market began beneath the first floor of a city that had forgotten how to descend. Its entrance was a narrow door between a shoe repair and a dentist’s office, marked only by a brass bell with a crack running through its clapper....
Hopeful Science Fiction. The Doctor of Elsewhere Winter sealed Vey Station in lavender dusk. Frost silvered the iron canopy, and the departure board displayed impossible seasons: ORCHARD, 6:40; SALT COAST, 6:55; FIRST THUNDER, 7:10. The board had been installed by the old line...
Hopeful Science Fiction. The Patient Was a Window Dr. Mara Venn kept her clinic beneath the eastern solar sail, where condensation beaded on lavender panels and the air smelled faintly of rain caught in a jar. Her patients did not usually arrive in person. They came as pauses in...
Hopeful Science Fiction. The Note Under the Floor At the desert observatory, every truth had a pitch. Mira heard it first when a courier confessed that the government had sealed the western road. The lie beneath his words arrived as a grinding whisper, but the truth was a bright...
Hopeful Science Fiction. The Seed Below the Lamps Every night, Sora hung her lanterns along the paths people avoided. They climbed the service ladders, trembled beneath pipes slick with condensation, and leaned beside the dark hydroponic vaults. Their little flames were green as...
