Hopeful Science Fiction. Platform Nine at the End of the World Silas Vale retired from the theatre on a Friday because actors eventually forget which lives are theirs. He kept the railway tickets, though, and his grandmother’s folded map, and the small music box whose tune had...
Hopeful Science Fiction. The Country on Her Hand At sixteen, Liora could read the monastery by its gravity. The kitchens clung to the lowest tunnels. The infirmary turned where the comet's spin was gentlest. The signal chapel floated near the oldest rock, tethered by iron chains...
Hopeful Science Fiction. The Market Under the First Floor At midnight, the stairwell behind the pharmacy opened onto a market no street had ever reached. It spread beneath the city in violet dusk, its stalls built from old shopfronts and rain-slick tarpaulins. The air smelled of...
Hopeful Science Fiction. The Water's Moving Map Mara Vale surveyed the border river from a skiff with a silver spoon lashed to its bow. The spoon trembled when the current changed its mind, its bowl swinging toward whatever grief, anger, or homesickness the water had carried...
Hopeful Science Fiction. The House With One Extra Door Elias Vale had spent sixty-eight years leaving rooms. He had learned to do it young, in Los Angeles, by walking off a film set in the middle of a scene and letting somebody else explain to the director where he had gone. He...
Hopeful Science Fiction. Winter Platform Seven At the end of winter, the station grew a platform no timetable admitted. Frost silvered the rails, and beneath the arched roof the departure board displayed impossible destinations: APRIL FIELDS, LAST THUNDER, THE YEAR OF RED PEARs,...
Hopeful Science Fiction. The Market of Unclaimed Things By the time Orin Vale reached the market, the rain had turned the floating platforms into islands of wet asphalt. Lanterns floated beneath the boards, their lavender light trembling underfoot. Stalls sold memories without...

Hopeful Science Fiction. The Train with No Platform Dr. Anja Vale arrived at Meridian station on a train that had no platform behind it. The locomotive was painted the deep violet of a thunderhead, and its windows glowed the green of pharmacy signs against the lavender dunes....
Hopeful Science Fiction. The Seed Below the Lamps Every night, Sora hung her lanterns along the paths people avoided. They climbed the service ladders, trembled beneath pipes slick with condensation, and leaned beside the dark hydroponic vaults. Their little flames were green as...
Hopeful Science Fiction. The River’s Other Name At midnight, the river changed direction. Mara Vale stood on the Vey Bridge with her silver spoon pressed to the iron rail. Beneath her boots, wet asphalt gleamed lavender in the pharmacy-sign glow. Across the border, green...
Hopeful Science Fiction. The Silver Spoon At low tide, Mara Venn walked the Bracken River with a silver spoon balanced on its surface. She never touched the water. The spoon trembled as the current changed, its bowl catching lavender light from the clouds and the green...
Hopeful Science Fiction. The Monastery Without Dawn At the monastery of clockmakers, mornings arrived according to whichever bell had been oiled most recently. Some mornings were bright and abrupt, smelling of rain on hot stone. Others were blue, low, and thick with the scent of...
Hopeful Science Fiction. The Citizens of Vesperly At noon, the lavender shadows of Vesperly voted beneath the awnings. They stretched from wet asphalt to shopfronts, each one perfectly shaped and many steps behind its owner. A baker’s shadow carried a rolling pin. A tram...
