Magical Realism. The Machine That Dreamed in Salt Every tide brought back one forgotten object to Bellwether: a child’s red mitten, a brass key polished smooth, a cracked spectacle lens, a spoon blackened by strange tea. The objects appeared along the pearl strand between the...
Gothic Fantasy. The Monastery of Wrong Hours At the monastery of Saint Vey, time was kept by five hundred clocks, and not one of them agreed. There were brass clocks shaped like fleas, silver clocks with no hands, and tall wooden clocks that stopped whenever the wind crossed the...
Mythic Fiction. The Theatre Beneath the Sand Every night, when the cobalt shadow of the city fell across the dunes, the theatre opened its doors and performed tomorrow’s discarded endings. Actors wore the costumes of lives that might have been: crowns sinking beneath black...
Historical Fantasy. The Hinge-Maker of Vesper Peak In the winter of 1893, Nera Venn climbed the cinder stair to the observatory with cold iron in her satchel and tobacco-brown snow whispering against her boots. The mountain slept beneath them, a furnace of old hunger sealed...
Fairy-Tale Fiction. The Market of Unclaimed Things Every winter, the market of lost memories came down from the mountains and hovered above the drowned fields. Lanterns burned without flames. Brass staircases unfolded into air, and the vendors arranged their stalls beneath black...
Science Fiction. The Missing Floor Every night, after the upper city locked its windows, Sava climbed down into the market beneath it. There were no streets below the first floor. The city stood on a vast terracotta drum, and beneath the drum the market spread in warm, crowded...
Mystery. The Platform Beneath Winter At 4:17 each morning, Mara Vale climbed into the lighthouse and opened the sky. Winter had sealed the harbor with hail, but beyond the salt glass, autumn sailed over a green sea and summer walked openly through orchards still buried in snow....
The Country on Her Hand On the highest floor of Bellweather, where the stairways ended and the roofs began, the night market opened beneath a sky stitched from copper and cloud. There were no streets below the first floor. The city had been built upward for generations, its...
Speculative Fiction. The Measure Below the Bridge Every night at midnight, the river in Vey crossed itself. It did not divide or flood. It folded, east bank sliding beneath west bank with the soft inevitability of a knife under silk, then rose again on the opposite side. By...
Fantasy. The Lake Beneath the Garden Twice each month, when the sea withdrew beyond the violet cliffs and left the smell of iron on the wind, Vesper Lake appeared beneath Orison Garden. It came up the way a held breath comes up: quietly, and all at once. Neral rowed across it...
Adventure. The Bell That Was Not Hers Mara Venn made bells in the narrow workshop above the cobbler on Lantern Street. Each morning, the street’s noises arrived through her windows: shutters, cart wheels, sparrows disputing crumbs, the bakery bell calling the first customers...
Surrealism. The Hour With No Address By dawn, everyone in the Vesper Apartments remembered what would happen next. Cooks knew which orders would be shouted. Children knew which windows would break. Old women leaned from their balconies and called warnings to streets that had not...

Science Fiction. The Returning Things At low tide, the beach of Bellweather became an archive of what people had forgotten. A silver button. A child’s shoe. A bottle with no message. A red scarf appeared each morning on the shingle below the nurse’s cottage, damp as a wound...
Surrealism. The Forest That Had Been Put Outside By morning, Lichen Reach had no yesterday. Its trees stood in burnt orange light, their roots wrapped around one another like sleeping animals. Between them ran a blue storm-light that had no weather. The ranger, Iven, stood at...
Gothic Fantasy. The Unfinished Platform At the end of the winter line stood a station with no name. Its roof sagged under a snowfall that had not touched the valley, and its clock had stopped at 4:17, the hour when people began pretending they had made no choice at all. Lantern...
