Speculative Fiction. The Last Train from Elsewhere Elias Venn retired from the stage with a cough, a modest apartment, and the habit of entering rooms he had already left. He could do it only once each: place his palm on the door, remember the room, and step back into the exact...
Surrealism. The Star with No Plural On every sixth dawn, a star rose above the desert observatory and tapped its blue light against the dome. The operators called it the singular , because after each message the sky contained only one of whatever it named. Mara watched from the...
Fantasy. The Monastery in the Comet At violet dusk, Sister Orra stitched a seam across the sky. She worked in the monastery’s eastern chamber, where the comet’s pale inner wall curved like the inside of a shell. Below her feet, the buried chapel trembled with distant bells....
Weird Fiction. The Sickness of 14 Wren Street Mara Venn came up 14 Wren Street with a black bag, two thermometers, and the particular silence of a house that has packed to leave. The air pressed grey against the windows and there was no fire to make it. Above the rooftops the...
Weird Fiction. The Last Woman in Orbit On the night the village marked its eighty-second winter, Captain Iona Vey climbed into the narrow observatory beneath the seventh rib of Sleeping Gar and refused to come down. She had once mapped coastlines from orbit. Now the maps lay...
Magical Realism. The Whale's Last Lantern Mara had been appointed ranger of the Unmoved Forest on the morning she arrived by weather balloon. The balloon carried no pilot, only a brass key tied to its basket with blue thread. Below it stretched the pearl-colored sea, and below...
Mythic Fiction. The Tide’s Small Returning Saltmere kept its secrets below the pavement. Not in cellars, not beneath the chapel, but under Gull Street, where the old houses leaned together against the sea and the stones shone green when the moon was low. Each tide returned one...
Mystery. The Courtyard of Small Graves Inez Bell was paid to keep the mountain tidy, not to ask why the old observatory had three hundred windows and no door. Every Tuesday she climbed from the municipal nursery with a wheelbarrow of thorn cuttings, ash-grey herbs, and stories...
Romance. Shadows Before the Snow Mara arrived at Harrowmere three days before the first guests, while the mountains were still bare and the resort stood with its windows dark. The shadows had come first, as her grandmother always said. They pooled beneath the eaves, crossed the...
Speculative Fiction. The Market Below Winter The market hung beneath a sky with no clouds, its stalls tethered by iron chains to an old brown cloud. Rust-red lanterns leaned into the pale winter light. Below them, the lake turned over in a slow black wheel. Elias Venn found the...
Folk Horror. The Suitcase of Lost Hours At half past midnight Mina went down into the market the way she had been taught, by a stairwell that ended in the back room of a dentist who died in 1974 and still kept his appointments. The city stood over her in concrete and lit...
Fantasy. The Market Below the First Floor At violet dusk, Ilya set up beneath the hanging floors of Veyr, where no street descended and every shop opened instead into the earth. Her needle hung above a thimble, silver as a storm. Beside it stood a salt jar clouded by damp and a...
Surrealism. Clauses Against the Sky At Vesper Station, winter filled the rafters with blue storm-light, and the chimney breathed invisible swallows that argued in the flue about where summer had been put. Snow leaned its whole body against the platform timetable. Inside, every...
Fantasy. The houses had homesickness Every house in Bellwether kept its troubles in the walls. The miller's house coughed up salt whenever he argued with his brother. The chandler's house opened its windows in winter and filled the rooms with moth-wing dust. The village nurse,...
Adventure. The Country in Her Hand On the fifth floor of the Lantern Apartments, every resident remembered tomorrow and forgot yesterday. Nera Vale was the youngest cartographer in the building and the only one who still knew how to draw a place she had seen with her eyes. She...
Magical Realism. The 519th platform By noon, the station had collected all the colors the desert could spare: pearl dust on the rails, midnight blue beneath the awning, and one red door at the end of Platform 519. Mara Venn stood beside the signal box with a ranger’s brass key...
Fairy-Tale Fiction. The First Note Every bridge in Bellwether was a promise made visible. Stone arches carried vows across the river; rope walks carried excuses; the narrow black-lacquer bridge at the edge of town carried the mayor's promise to mend the public clock before it...
Science Fiction. The Paths in the Dark Mara made lanterns for the paths people avoided. Her house stood at knee height in the village built within the ribs of a sleeping giant, where the old bones rose around the terracotta roofs like the walls of a cathedral with no sky....
Mystery. The Gardener of Empty Lots Mara Venn was municipal gardener of the Ninth Ward, though municipal maps showed her district as a blank space between two avenues. She worked before dawn, when the shadows of chimneys gathered in doorways and the citizens who owned them slept...
Romance. The Last Screening Mara had inherited the abandoned cinema with its moss-green walls, its leaking roof, and the black umbrella left in the third row. The umbrella belonged to Elias Vale, according to the family legend, though no photograph had ever shown his face. Her...
Folk Horror. The Book of Borrowed Rooms Mara Venn had learned that Bellwether forgot things in a particular order. First the names of children who had grown too old for the cliff path. Then the songs of women who left by boat and never came back. Finally, the doors of houses...
Speculative Fiction. The Monastery of Uneven Hours At the monastery of clockmakers, the clocks disagreed so thoroughly that the cooks had abandoned breakfast. One showed dawn while the kitchen remained blue with night. Another chimed noon beneath a ceiling of rust-red clouds....
Fantasy. The catalogue from tomorrow At dusk, the observatory turned violet beneath the crater rim. Oxidation spread over its copper ribs in delicate green-black veins, and cloud-white stars appeared above the dead caldera as if snow had been scattered across the sky. Imara Vey,...
Mythic Fiction. The Last Bell Senn’s stall stood at the hinge of the market stairs, where the city’s first floor ended without warning. Above her, buildings leaned shoulder to shoulder over shopfronts lit in honey and fire. Below her, the night market descended into a hollow...
