Weird Fiction. The Door That Refused the Hall On the fourteenth floor, the elevator opened onto a corridor that had never been there. Mara Venn rolled her bicycle inside. Its front wheel crossed a brass threshold marked 2039, and the door at the end of the hall clicked shut...
Hopeful Science Fiction. The Note Under the Snow Nia first heard the note in the garden’s eastern greenhouse, where rain tapped the glass roof like impatient fingers. She was tuning her violin when a gardener told her the pear tree had died. The sentence was true. A clear...
Science Fiction. The Living Shade At dusk in Bellwether, the citizens left their shadows at home. Not literally. Their shadows crossed the terracotta streets without them, slipping beneath awnings, climbing walls, gathering in the eucalyptus gardens to exchange gossip. A...
Fantasy. The tide inside the greenhouse At low tide, the lake appeared between the beds of cloud-white moss. Its water did not reflect the orbital windows. It reflected a forest of black trunks and violet leaves, though no forest grew beyond the greenhouse. The lake extended...
Hopeful Science Fiction. The Theatre of Unfinished Things Every morning, Mara unlocked the theatre before the street had decided what colour to be. Lavender light gathered beneath the broken skylight. Wet asphalt gleamed beyond the doors, and the pharmacy sign across the lane...
Science Fiction. The patient was a room Dr. Mara Venn arrived at Unit 8C carrying a black medical case and a copper star polished smooth by a child's thumb. She had walked the courtyard twice before knocking, because the first time she had forgotten to, and forgetting to knock...
Science Fiction. The House with a Fever Every door in the Museum of Bravery opened somewhere else. One showed a woman stepping onto a frozen lake with a rope tied to her waist. Another revealed a city lit beneath the sea, where children ran barefoot through streets of blue...
Science Fiction. The Name in the Future Mara Venn kept the observatory catalogue in a room cut from the volcano’s throat. The walls were terracotta, veined with old iron, and the windows faced a valley of eucalyptus trees whose leaves moved like green water in the wind. Above...
The Memory Bell Mara Venn was seventeen, and every bell in the apartment building rang for something that had not happened yet. They began at sunrise, each apartment answering with a small brass note. A cough three rooms above. A slammed door in the year behind next year. The...
Historical Fantasy. The Book of Departures On the seventh winter of Sister Ilyra’s service, the comet monastery cast off another star and settled into its new orbit. The monastery had no windows facing the inhabited heavens. Its chambers were cut from blue-black stone, its...
Science Fiction. The catalogue of the missing At dusk, when the eucalyptus trees turned the colour of old coins, Mara Venn found her own name in a catalogue dated three hundred years hence. She was an archivist of absences, keeper of the city’s municipal memory. Every person...
Surrealism. The Seed's Morning Mara shaped windows for rooms in other worlds. She worked in the crown of Seed Seven, where an orbital greenhouse curved around a black seed the size of a city. The seed remembered forests extinct for ten thousand years: cedar rain, fox-burned...
Historical Fantasy. The Book of Unfinished Rooms By 1873, Morrow House had acquired a reputation as carefully as a coat of unpaid bills. Its tenants could remember tomorrow, next winter, the hour of their own deaths, but never yesterday. They entered with apologies on their...
Science Fiction. The Catalogue of Mornings Mara Venn kept the records in the basement of the Halcyon Apartments, where the walls were painted the color of old brick and the windows looked onto a city that had not happened yet. Everyone in the building remembered the future. Not...
Mystery. The Courtyard of Small Graves Inez Bell was paid to keep the mountain tidy, not to ask why the old observatory had three hundred windows and no door. Every Tuesday she climbed from the municipal nursery with a wheelbarrow of thorn cuttings, ash-grey herbs, and stories...
Science Fiction. The Market of Unclaimed Things By noon, the floating market had folded itself around Sera’s boots. Platforms of woven cane hung above a violet gulf, their edges lashed with copper wire. Stalls drifted at different heights, connected by ramps that appeared only...
Speculative Fiction. The Seed’s Memory By the time Mara Vale came back to the greenhouse, the red leaves had reached the observation cupola. The station orbited a blue-white star, but its days were the color of rust. They entered through narrow glass and settled on the...
Speculative Fiction. The Monastery of Uneven Hours At the monastery of clockmakers, the clocks disagreed so thoroughly that the cooks had abandoned breakfast. One showed dawn while the kitchen remained blue with night. Another chimed noon beneath a ceiling of rust-red clouds....
Hopeful Science Fiction. The Work Below the Glass Every morning at two minutes past six, Mara Venn lowered herself onto the copper rail above the observatory’s floor and began her private ritual. The river moved beneath the glass floor: not the mountain’s cold meltwater, but...
Science Fiction. The Door That Grew Low Every evening, after the visitors left and the gardeners folded their silver tools into their aprons, Mara walked the paths she had made dark. She carried a brass lantern with a clouded green pane, and its light reached only as far as the...
Speculative Fiction. The Archive Keeps Its Doors Closed Every morning, Dr. Sera Vale rowed beneath the drowned stacks of the Municipal Archive, her oar knocking a drowned doorframe that gave like a knuckle. She carried a black physician’s case shaped like a narrow house....
Hopeful Science Fiction. The Keeper’s Last Performance At sixty-eight, Elian Venn could return to any room he had ever left. Not in memory, which was unreliable, but with his shoes finding the same grit, the same draft, the same afternoon behind him. He had used the gift only...
Magical Realism. Rooms for the Light At the bottom of the station, below the irrigation decks and the pearled hydroponic shelves, the seed slept in a chamber no larger than a fist. Blue roots rested against the glass. Inside them, forests waited: cork oaks with leaves like small...
Mystery. The Observatory Below Captain Ilya Venn had been above the monastery for eleven years, though the monastery was not below her in any way that mattered. It was the country beneath her that had become doubtful. Governments changed their names. Rivers were reported in new...
