Romance. The Market of Unclaimed Things By dawn, the floating market had gathered above the flooded roofs of Bellwether, its stalls drifting on silver ropes. Lanterns reflected in the black water below, though the lanterns themselves burned with the green light of deep moss....
Folk Horror. The Guests Before the Guests Vindpass had forty-two rooms, though the sign at the summit said thirty-six. Mara had counted them every autumn for seventeen years, counting panes rather than walls. The resort stood above the fir line where snow froze before it touched...
Speculative Fiction. What the Market Kept Beneath the Floor At dusk the bakers unhooked their skirts of stone and the night market came down. Stairs grew out of the undersides of buildings, patient as ivy, and under them the stalls opened, lit by a pale winter light whose color...
Fantasy. The River’s Other Bank Violet dusk settled over Bellwether as Nurse Mara Venn locked the doors of the ferry house. Across the river, the town wore the same violet, though its windows burned cloud-white. Every night at midnight, the current reversed. The western bank...
The Door That Faced the Rain The Bureau of Hydraulic Sentiment owned three boats and one surveyor, and for eleven years the surveyor was Mara Venn. She poled a flat-bottomed silver boat down the Reach with a lavender flag tied at the bow, because her grandmother had owned a...
Magical Realism. The Forest That Had Been Missing On the night the forest disappeared from time, Mara Vale was standing beneath its oldest cedar with a jar of lamp oil and a list of forbidden fires. The cedar had not withered. It had simply ceased to belong to the year. Leaves...
Gothic Fantasy. The Lake Beneath the Salt Every seventh night, when the moon withdrew behind the desert stars, Lake Aster surfaced beneath the salt flats. It arrived without weather: a black mirror spreading through cracks in the crust, its water holding the pale coral towers...
Historical Fantasy. The Bicycle That Knew the Door Mara Venn had carried the post for three winters, and in all that time she had never once been late. That was the whole of her reputation, and she had built it the way a mason builds a wall: one course at a time, no ornament,...
Science Fiction. The Archive in the Blue Suitcase Mara’s mother had warned her never to wake the whale, though the whale was nine hundred meters long and had slept beneath the sea for one hundred and eighty-seven years. It surfaced only to breathe, a black iron ridge lifting...
Mystery. The Courtyard Without a Door Mara Venn pruned the courtyard of shadows beneath Bellweather Crescent at ten minutes past midnight, when the rain turned the city to quicksilver. Her municipal shears whispered through shapes that hurried past her: narrow bishops, broad...
Romance. The Seed Beneath the Glass Mara Vale kept the last door in a drawer beneath her workbench. It was not a door you could open from the ordinary side. On paper, it appeared as a narrow black rectangle, scaled for a human shoulder, with a brass handle and a number in faded...
Speculative Fiction. The physician of lost hours At the monastery of Saint Vey, clocks hung from every rafter and filled every window, each making a different argument about what a minute was. Some ticked. Some chimed. One coughed quietly into its brass lungs whenever snow...
Fantasy. The House at the End of the Track On the upper slope of Mount Serein, the observatory had been built into the sleeping volcano by people who wanted to measure the sky without leaving the mountain. Its copper dome had oxidized to the color of old blood, and its windows...
Gothic Fantasy. The Lake Between Breaths At Vesper Reach, winter arrived first as an absence, and then as a surplus. By November the hotels stood empty, their windows white with frost, yet their shadows stretched across the frozen gardens a full hour before sunset. The shadows...
Magical Realism. The Forest Outside the Hour Mara Venn had been told that the forest had been evacuated from time, but the map did not explain what that meant. It showed a green boundary enclosing a blank white space, with tiny ink symbols around the edge: a dropped stitch, a...

Historical Fantasy. The Memory of Rain On the first morning of October, Mara Venn unlocked the courtyard of the Ninth House and found the future already there. Rain hung in the air above the beds, each drop suspended like a bead of steel on a windowpane. It trembled when she...
Mystery. The Door That Remembered Her Name Mara Vale kept the museum's night kitchen as if it were a living thing. At midnight she sharpened the knives, polished the brass handles, and set out one plate for every door in the building. The Museum of Doors had three hundred...
Surrealism. The Map with a Wrong Edge Every bridge in Veyra carried a promise carved beneath its railing: to arrive, to return, to remember, to forgive. Every river was a witness. The river did not speak, but stones remembered the names of those who had crossed, and on wet...
Weird Fiction. The Hinge Shop Mara Venn kept her forge beneath the abandoned cinema, in the room where the projectionist had once stored reels. The roof leaked. The bellows worked. Every morning she gathered iron filings from the carpet and hammered them into hinges for doors...
Hopeful Science Fiction. The Whale at Evening Elias Vale had spent forty years learning how to leave rooms. He left dressing rooms through narrow doors, stages through trapdoors, hotel suites while the phones still rang. As a retired actor, he had thought the skill would become...
Magical Realism. The Seedhouse Mara kept the seedhouse cold enough for breath to bloom on the inside of its windows. Beyond the glass, the planet below was a blue-black basin, nameless from orbit, while the greenhouse curved around a single seed no larger than a thumbnail. The...
Speculative fiction. The First Upward Drop At 6:17 on a wet Tuesday, the rain stopped falling and began rising. Mara saw it happen from the kitchen window, where she was burning barley water for her father’s cough. The drops struck the porch roof, hesitated, then lifted into...
