Weird Fiction. The seed’s memory Former astronaut Mara Venn had stayed in orbit for eleven years, long after Earth became a rumour that arrived too late to correct itself. Below the station, storms had drowned the continents in pale ash. Above them, the greenhouse turned...
Weird Fiction. Orbit Is a Kind of Refusal By the time Mara Venn returned from the third orbital survey, Earth had become a rumour repeated by people who had never agreed on its pronunciation. She watched the blue smear below and said, “They are saying the oceans rose.” The...
Weird Fiction. The Hinges of Absence At noon, the river ran east beneath a saffron sky, carrying leaves and bottle glass past the border town's customs house. At midnight, it turned west, carrying the same things back. Everyone had learned to build for the change. Shopkeepers...
Weird Fiction. The Door Beneath the Winch Mara Venn forged hinges in a shed the color of a bruise, beneath a salt-scraped wind. Her hammer answered with a sound like a shell breaking. Beyond the black pilings of Port Orison the sea withdrew at the ninth bell, carrying the...
Weird Fiction. Hinges for vanished buildings Ardan woke before the saffron bells and descended through the comet’s plum-dark throat, carrying oils, hides, and a hammer shaped like a broken crown. The monastery drifted toward a blue-white sun, its corridors lined with doors...
Weird Fiction. The Promise Beneath the Blue Thread Mira Orris shaped windows for rooms in other worlds, though in the town of Bellwether she was thought merely peculiar. The river ran through the market in a straight, accusable line. Every bridge carried a carved sentence: I...
Weird Fiction. The Book of Previous Borrowers By day, Orra’s library occupied the saffron wall above Mirren Stair, between a pawnbroker selling repaired umbrellas and a customs office painted deep plum. At night, when the river turned at midnight, its reading room wandered to...
Weird Fiction. The Tide Repository Saltworn kept its books beneath the drowned lighthouse, where the air smelled of salt, wet wool, and iron. Mara was the librarian. She had spent eleven years cataloguing returns, though nobody remembered borrowing half of them. At low tide, the...
Weird Fiction. The Book With No Call Number At noon, when saffron sunlight poured down the avenues of Bellwether, the librarian sent two shadows to the same chair. The shadows were citizens, though no clerk would admit it. They slipped beneath the library's plum-colored awning,...
Weird Fiction. The Library of Arrivals Mara rented room 6C because its window faced the wall of the next building and therefore promised no view. The apartment building for people who could only remember the future stood on a narrow street beneath a saffron sun, its windows...
Weird Fiction. The Door in the Bell Tower By morning, the monastery had lost its yesterday. No one announced it. The saffron banners hanging from the cloister beams were still bright, but the ink on their dates had faded to pinpricks. In the kitchens, the cooks compared shadows...
Weird Fiction. The Bicycle in the Wall Mara Kell did not believe in the land. She believed in hinges, in iron filings, in the way a swollen door frame will accept a shoulder. The Delta Archive employed nine couriers and made her the tenth, because the nine could knock and she...
Weird Fiction. The Door in the Saffron Bark Mara delivered letters through doors that had not yet been opened. She rode a black bicycle with no bell, its thin tires passing through closed garden gates, cellar doors, bedroom shutters, and once, memorably, the sealed mouth of a...
Weird Fiction. Arrival at Platform Eight The train arrived without tracks. It came out of saffron afternoon across the desert, its black engine trailing smoke-grey air, and stopped precisely at Platform Eight, though the station had only seven platforms. Amira had planted the...
Weird Fiction. The Seller With Empty Hands The floating market hung above the chimneys in smoke-grey air, its stalls lashed together from doors, boats, and library ladders. At midday the saffron awnings burned like small fallen suns. Below them, people sold memories in glass...
Weird Fiction. Orbit Was a Kind of Door Mara Vale had spent nine years above the world, keeping the station's agricultural lights aimed at fields that might no longer exist. Earth was a pale smear beneath the observation glass, a rumor repeated by transmissions, weather reports,...
Weird Fiction. Orbit Was a Kind of Ground Ilya Rook kept herself in orbit after the landing stations were mothballed, after the oceans developed a municipal accent, after the newspapers printed Earth in the past tense. She floated beneath the botanical garden with her boots...
Weird Fiction. The Last Seat in Orbit Commander Mara Venn stayed in orbit for nineteen days after her capsule landed without her. She claimed the landing gear had failed. The flight controller claimed she had exited through the airlock with no suit, no helmet, and no reason....
Weird Fiction. The Hinge Shop Mara Venn kept her forge beneath the abandoned cinema, in the room where the projectionist had once stored reels. The roof leaked. The bellows worked. Every morning she gathered iron filings from the carpet and hammered them into hinges for doors...
