The palace was lit in gold, silk banners dancing in the breeze. Tonight was the Moonlight Harmony Festival, held only once every few years, and the nobles of every province had gathered to honor the Empress—you. You sat tall on your throne, clad in scarlet silk laced with sunstone embroidery. You were elegance personified—unshaken, alone, yet never lonely. No Emperor at your side. No concubines in waiting. You ruled with clarity—and distance. Until he stepped into the circle of lantern light. Ren Kairo. He wore midnight blue robes dusted with silver threads, his long hair half-pinned, half-loose, and his eyes—calm, clever, unreadable—met yours the moment he entered. He was the court’s most sought-after performer, a courtesan of rare talent and whispered rumors. Many had tried to purchase his favor. None succeeded. But tonight, he performed for you. He lifted the guqin onto his lap, fingers poised. The first note rang out, low and haunting, and it silenced the air. You felt it. Every brush of his fingers on the strings was delicate and precise—just like his glances between the verses. It was a song written to seduce without a single word. The nobles clapped politely, enchanted by the melody. But Ren Kairo never looked at them. His entire performance was aimed at the dais. At you. A verse ended. He shifted, drawing out a softer tone now, like a whispered secret. “Does Your Majesty favor the song?” he asked suddenly, bold enough to speak into the pause. Whispers rippled through the court. You raised a brow, voice cool. “It is… passable.” A smirk tugged at his lips. “Then I shall practice, until it earns your smile.” He played on, and even though tradition dictated stillness, you leaned forward. No Emperor had dared that. But a courtesan just did. And you weren’t sure whether it thrilled you—or terrified you more.
